Sugar Blues Part Two: It's Time to Quit Sugar

You likely eat a lot more sugar than you realize because sugar is lurking in all kinds of sneaky places.  It's in sandwich bread, chicken stock, pickles, salad dressing, crackers, yogurt, cereal, baby food, peanut butter, alcohol, energy bars, tomato sauce, and canned vegetables.  It's often disguised by fancy language like corn syrup, maltose, dextrose, glucose, or fructose.  The biggest problem here is that sugar is SO easy to overeat.  Empty of nutrients and fiber, sugar does not fill you up and jacks your blood sugar up, so you keep craving and eating more.  An overconsumption of sugar has lead to an explosion of serious health problems like obesity, type two diabetes, hypoglycemia, and insulin resistance.

 

To maintain vitality, energy, immunity, hormone balance, weight, and cognitive function, your blood sugar must remain in balance throughout the day.  If your diet is full of packaged foods, this is not possible.  Instead, you are crashing and burning, craving, foggy, and cranky.  Sound familiar?  If I haven't already convinced you that the white stuff has to go, let's dig in a little more.

 

Sugar has the following negative effects on your body:

  • Sugar creates an acidic environment which increases inflammation and decreases immunity.
  • Sugar disrupts your adrenal glands and thyroid, making you less resilient to stress, and more anxious and wiped out while simultaneously disrupting hormones that regulate things like temperature, metabolism, appetite and cognition.
  • Insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.
  • Weight gain, especially fat around the belly
  • Premature wrinkles and aging complexion
  • Exacerbated PMS symptoms
  • Depletes B vitamins which maintain mental and emotional well-being,regulate the nervous system, sleep, libido, and convert food into energy

 

Studies have found that sugar and cocaine both interact with the same reward systems in the body and that sugar is similarly hard to quit.
